UUFN YoUth GroUp 2017 GA Trip New Orleans
Crowdfunding Completed: May 28, 2017
Amount Funded: $1250
Project Owner: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark
Short Description of Project
Help Youth Group members from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark (UUFN) get to General Assembly in New Orleans, LA!
How was this project connected to UU?
Since our first Trip to GA in Phoenix in 2012, our YoUth Group has developed leadership skills, learned about the inner workings of Unitarian Universalism, and become more involved in our community as a whole. While we continue to bridge out and in, the culture of this group remains deeply dedicated to active service. Some of the youth have been active youth delegates in the past, and youth who have participated in GA have also later gone on to participate in committees as young adults. Attending GA helps provide a deeper sense of the importance of what they are doing when they participate in the life of the congregation, and in service.
Our youth group is service oriented locally, nationally, and internationally. For example, last year our group traveled to Pittsburgh and worked with the Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church doing service work for Northside Common Ministries, Grow Pittsburgh, and Global Links. We support our local homeless community by providing food and hygiene bags, and we volunteer in our local parks. This year, in continuing to support one of our “actions of immediate witness” focused on LGBTQ rights, we participated in the Transgender Monologue Players presentation of "You Have Always Been Welcome Here," a play about the lives of four transgender individuals of faith. The presentation was followed by a workshop, and the entire event was open to the public.
Full Description of Project
Twelve members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark (UUFN) YoUth GroUp will be traveling to New Orleans, LA, to attend the UU General Assembly (GA).
All our YoUth GroUp members have made a financial commitment to our trip. Your donation will help to offset the cost of GA travel. Overall cost for this trip is just under $15,000 for the group.
Most members of our YoUth GroUp have not participated in GA before, but are excited to attend. We also have four seniors bridging who will participate in the bridging ceremony at GA.
