The Global Majorities Collective: a UU POC Project

The Global Majorities Collective: a UU POC Project

Crowdfunding Completed: April 29, 2017

Amount Funded: $10410

Short Description of Project

The Global Majorities Collective, a new project of DRUUMM, is an experiment in creating a new UU culture, BY and FOR People of Color.

How was this project connected to UU?

Who are we?

DRUUMM is a Unitarian Universalist People of Color Ministry and anti-racist collective bringing lay and religious professionals together to overcome racism through resistance and transform Unitarian Universalism through our multicultural experiences.  We developed from several older ministries, namely the African American UU Ministries and Jubilee World anti-racism change trainings.

DRUUMM has a growing membership of UU People of Color from every district and region.  As an all-volunteer ministry, DRUUMM continues to lead efforts to fulfill the Journey Towards Wholeness Resolution towards becoming an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural UUA, creating space for youth, young adult and our families of color to heal and work collectively, and steward an effective organization that develops new leadership and manages consistent communication with members.

DRUUMM is a collective of people who identify as People of Color.  Allies are welcome and organized as Allies for Racial Equity.  Together we are open to all people.  We are grounded in the Unitarian Universalist tradition, and maintain a close relationship with the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

What do we do?

DRUUMM organizes community building events, leadership trainings, and is an advocate within the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

Full Description of Project

There are many sub-cultures within UUism: the Neo-Pagans, the high church New Englanders, the lay-led, Secular Humanist fellowships, etc.  Though, the one thing that every expression of UUism has had in common is the fact that whiteness and its cultural norms have been at the center of each.

For over twenty years, DRUUMM’s (Diverse and Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries) anti-racism, anti-oppression, and multiculturalism work has been focused on changing the predominantly white UU institutions- through efforts to diversify, educate white middle-class UUs on their internalized racism and white privilege, and has preferentially used the language of “allyship.”  While these are not futile pursuits on their own, the membership of DRUUMM, by and large, hasn’t felt like these efforts have produced a significant environment of inclusion.  We believe that this is due to an implicit focus on the benefit of such changes to the white institutions adopting them, rather than to the People of Color already within them, let alone those People of Color who might otherwise find a spiritual home in UUism down the line.  Instead, we would like to shift the focus toward the creation of a Unitarian Universalism without whiteness as its cultural, theological, and institutional center.  This is a significant paradigm shift- away from attempting to gain acceptance by white UUism, and instead turning our energies to minister more effectively to and with one another.

Think about it:

What would a UUism that centers the cultures and experiences of People of Color look like?  What music, academic discourse, poetry, art, food, and worship resources would result in an intentional effort to co-create a new expression of UUism that is for and by People of Color?

The UU Global Majorities Collective is an exciting new project of DRUUMM that will come together annually to develop and execute collaborative projects with the goal of building this new expression of UUism.  We are hoping that all interested UU POC will join us at our first gathering in Detroit in August, 2017!*

Please consider making a generous donation to “The Collective.”  With your assistance, we can co-create a truly diverse, truly revolutionary, UU multicultural ministry!
