Crowdfunding Completed: July 19, 2017

Amount Funded: $5200

Project Owner: First Unitarian Church of Honolulu

Short Description of Project

Let OWL fly in Hawaii and beyond! Fund an all-level Our Whole Lives Training of Trainers [ToT] to support quality sexuality education.

How was this project connected to UU?

Liberal religious sexuality education, provides roots and wings for program participants. Roots are our UU  traditions and values, which accept  and value participants  for who they are. Wings are the freedom to make meaning of their own lives; the opportunity to clarify their own values and apply them to their own experiences; and the strength to develop into their own true, best selves.
Our Whole Lives curricula are revolutionary in transforming fear and confusion about sexuality into a new reality based on the values of the inherent worth and dignity of each and every person. OWL is widely regarded as the Gold Standard for comprehensive sexuality education. OWL provides accurate, age-appropriate factual information while also helping participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

Our Whole Lives is a lifespan curricula for grades K-1, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12, young adults (ages 18-35), and adults. Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Older Adults will be released early in 2018.

Full Description of Project

Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education is REVOLUTIONARY!  Adults, youth, children and their families have their lives changed by attending OWL programs. OWL puts our faith into action by fostering healthy lives and relationships across the lifespan. The UUA and our OWL co-publisher, the United Church of Christ (UCC) also encourage OWL Out, extending the programs into underserved communities.

This unique, all-levels ToT will certify trainers to prepare facilitators to lead both OWL Out programs in Hawaii and elsewhere, including UU, UCC and other faith settings, thereby increasing access to the curriculum in Hawaii, the Western US and Canada, and in the UU Churches in the Philippines.

According to the budget for this training, the cost will be about $38,000 in total. This includes transportation, room, board, books, and trainers' expenses.  The United Church of Christ national office and UUA are supporting by covering the costs of the five trainers. We have received grants from several organizations, and donations from private individuals. Participants or their sponsoring organizations also pay a portion of the cost.  Faithify funds will be used to provide for some travel expenses, and partial scholarships for some participants.

Explain the goals and philosophy of the project:

OWL trainers at First Unitarian Church of Honolulu have worked with community partners for eight years to build an OWL-Out program. This work has been stymied by the small number of trainers and facilitators in Hawaii.  First Unitarian is now working with UCC congregations, community partners in Hawaii, and the national staff of the UUA and UCC to host a first-of-its-kind, all-levels Training of Trainers in September, 2017.

OWL helps participants of all ages make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior.  The OWL curricula provide accurate, developmentally appropriate information about topics, including relationships, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual health, and cultural influences on sexuality. The program is grounded in the values of self-worth, sexual health, responsibility, justice and inclusion.
