Short Description of Project
With your generosity, on April 12, the Sunday after Easter, the season of new life and new beginnings, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA, and the Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church will jointly ordain Madelyn Campbell as a Unitarian Universalist minister.
How was this project connected to UU?
My ordination is claimed by Unitarian Universalism because our congregational polity is at the heart of what we do. We have been defined by this since the Cambridge Platform of 1648. While I have fellowship from the Unitarian Universalist Association, it is only the congregation that has the power to ordain. When these two congregations bestow this honor and responsibility upon me, they will be claiming me as their own - as a Unitarian Universalist minister. They will be practicing congregational polity at it’s most basic level, reaching back 350 years to continue our thread.
My ordination claims Unitarian Universalism because I’m being ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry. It was the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington that helped me to reclaim my own spirituality and helped me to form my own theology when I first walked in the doors in 1988. Ordination, in our tradition, is in the hands of the congregations, and to claim that - to ask for a congregation, or in this instance for two congregations, to ordain me into the Unitarian Universalist ministry is to claim Unitarian Universalism at the core and to proclaim it loudly.
Full Description of Project
Looking at the center of a nautilus shell, who might imagine all the possibilities that will grow from there? The nautilus spirals out, along the golden ratio, growing in possibilities along the way. My journey into ministry has been like this, and now my ordination approaches! On April 12, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, VA, and the Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church will jointly ordain me as a Unitarian Universalist minister. The congregations themselves will ordain me – how special is that?
We are congregational in our polity. That means that ordination is in the hands of the congregations. UUCA has ushered me through seminary, sponsoring me as an aspirant and candidate, and AUUC shepherded me as intern minister, and now, both congregations have determined that I am worthy to carry the title “Reverend” and to be counted among our clergy.
But just as the Unitarian Universalist Association does not interfere with the abilities of congregations to ordain, the association also offers no money for the event. So friends, I am asking you to help out. In order to celebrate and to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend, we need money. Please consider donating to help make this event run smoothly.
My ordination will be on April 12, at 4:00 pm. The Sunday after Easter. Eastertide is the season of new life, new beginnings. If you plant a seed now, who knows what might grow?
