How was this project connected to UU?
Kayla parker is being ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Charleston.
Kayla Parker is our Contract Minister, who began serving here in September of 2016, and now has an extended contract through July of 2018. She is a 2016 graduate from Yale Divinity School, and from 2014 to 2016 she was the Ministerial Intern at a congregation of a similar size to ours. She has been active in interfaith community events, and is the editor of Becoming: A Spiritual Guide for Navigating Adulthood, published by the UUA’s Skinner House Press.
Kayla is inspired daily by chocolate, the outdoors, and the transformative power of community. She has fit right into the Charleston community, and is enjoying the wide variety of music, food, adventures, and most especially the wonderful people of the Kanawha Valley. She has become involved in various social justice actions already, and is working steadily on helping UUC become more engaged in our neighborhood, the West Side community.
Full Description of Project
On April 14th at 4pm, The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Charleston, WV will be ordaining Kayla Parker to the Unitarian Universalist Ministry. We know that many congregations and individuals have helped form Kayla in her ministry, and would love your support in making this ordination and celebration possible.
We are committed to helping offsetting the cost of travel for those religious professionals traveling to participate in this ordination, and want to throw a party fitting of West Virginia hospitality! We welcome all to join us for this, and know that some will not be able to, but would be happy to try and “bring you” to the celebration as much as possible. If there’s something you’d like to be sure we have present (a favorite food, a song to be played, etc.) please let us know here in the comments what that is and we’ll make sure your donation gets used towards this cause!
Rev. Ashley Horan, Executive Director of the Minnesota UU Social Justice Alliance will be preaching
Rev. Rose Edington and Rev. Mel Hoover, Ministers Emeriti of UUC will be presiding
Rev. Jim Lewis, retired Episcopal Priest and Activist in Charleston will be delivering the charge
All attending will be invited to participate!
Any funds exceeding the goal will be used as requested by Kayla to support our congregation’s Black Lives Matter Solidarity Task Force. We have recently been focused in engaging in our neighborhood, helping out with our elementary school’s after school program, becoming involved in housing discrimination issues – and are currently organizing anti-racism skill-building trainings for our congregation and community.
