Kayole Unitarian Church Home 500 Seat Tent Project

Crowdfunding Completed: June 15, 2016

Amount Funded: $0

Project Owner: Kayole Unitarian Church

Short Description of Project

We have a dream, and we have a prayer: Our young and growing congregation will have a home.We have the land. It has been provided by one of our Leaders for the congregation to use. We need the funds to purchase a tent to make this noble project possible.

How was this project connected to UU?

The tent purchase and installation is to provide a “home” for the Kayole Unitarian Church, one of 6 emerging Churches in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kenya.
This tent initiative was raised by members of the Kayole Unitarian Universalist Church in Kenya after they’ve gone through a lot of challenges holding their services continuously. The goal as envisioned by Kayole UU leader Mike Kamau is to serve the needs of Kayole UU members by providing a tent for holding their worship services and other church activities, which in turn will remedy the lack of reliable physical premises for Kayole Unitarian Universalist Church Services.

Full Description of Project

Tent3Land KayoleWe have a dream, and we have a prayer: Our young and growing congregation will have a home.

We have the land. It has been provided by one of our Leaders for the congregation to use. We have the will and the effort to turn this space into a place of beauty and worship, provided for our congregation. We need the funds to purchase a tent to make this noble project possible.

“Everyone is excited about this project when I broke the news to them. People received it positively and joy was written to everyone's face. Indeed we are looking forward to having our own place of worship and vacating nomadic status. I hope and my prayer is everyone will join us to make it happen.” -- Mike

Part of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kenya, we are an emerging congregation in Kayole Sub-County, Nairobi. Kayole’s population is approximately 500,000, and most of us live in “informal” homes with incomes below the poverty line. Many of us are casual laborers who live on a day to day basis. We believe strongly that Kayole Unitarian Universalist Faith has an important role to play in serving our community, and especially our youth.

We organized a youth peace tournament attended by masses of youth. We had different motivational speakers and invited many youth to attend our Sunday service, and they heeded the call. Our space was not large enough for the turnout, but this didn’t hinder our visitors from receiving the sermon and many were able to appreciate and understand our faith; they are now committed to practicing the Unitarian Faith. We believe strongly that our focus on peace and social justice, working with these young people, will help Kayole and even Kenya to become more just.

We know we are reaching many people and they hear our call, because our congregation has been growing even though we have no place to hold services. Sometimes, we have been battling to find venues for our Sunday services when we should be ministering to our Congregation; often we are forced to hold church service at members’ houses and their houses are not capable of holding us all.

We, as Kayole Unitarian Leadership, are moved by increasing interest in our Faith and want to be able to accommodate everyone; hence we came up with the idea of acquiring a permanent tent. Since one of our leaders offered his land to be used by the church in its daily activities, we saw this as a grand opportunity to bring this land to good use. We hope that, through Faithify, we can make more friends around the world who will contribute to our new home, and to the growth of Unitarian Universalism in Kenya.

Our sister UU congregations in the United States and Canada, First Unitarian in Albuquerque, NM and First Unitarian in Toronto Canada, are encouraging and helping us in this project, especially after they visited us (with a representative from the International UU Council) last summer.

With the help of our old friends, and through new friends around the world, we know that we will be able to acquire and install this tent, fulfil our purpose and grow our membership. We will create a beautiful home and community for our congregation, and will no longer be required to hold our services in a nomadic way (“today were here, tomorrow we are there and the other days no service for lack of worship premises”) This tent will set us free from nomad ism and lack of physical premises so we can grow and serve our members, creating a community of Faith and Social Justice in a community which needs and wants both. We are very pleased with this tent, because

We thank you for your help and support, and plan to keep our friends – old and new – in touch with the success of this project once it begins, and even when it is complete.

It is with this humble request that we are asking all our friends out there to support us in this noble project by enabling us to acquire and install a tent.

We intend to raise a total amount of $ 3,780 for the Kayole UU 500 seater tent Project.
