How was this project connected to UU?
Unitarians, Universalists, and Unitarian Universalists around the world have been coming together for international gatherings for decades. UU Partner Church Council (UUPCC) and the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) work collaboratively and with the support of the Unitarian Universalist Association and its International Office. This project is a direct expression of Unitarian Universalist principles and values in action.
We know our free faith can be strengthened across the globe by facilitating opportunities for Unitarian and UU (U/UU) youth and young adults from around the world to meet each other, to develop connections, worship and work together in global partnership. Unitarian Universalism will continue to flourish far into the future by giving our young U/UUs opportunities to connect with those from cultures and countries beyond their own.
Full Description of Project
Your contributions through this Faithify campaign will enable up to thirty young adults to travel from the Philippines, India, Africa, Canada, United States, and Europe to this the 5-day International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) conference in July 2016. This will be a first! And you can help make this life-changing experience happen for these young adult U/UUs!
The costs of travel for many of the young adults who would like to participate in their year’s ICUU International Conference is beyond their reach. Your contribution to this Faithify project will make travel possible for these thirty young adult U/UUs to attend–Thank You for making a difference in their lives!
UU Partner Church Council is joining together with ICUU to developing the next generation of leadership and building community among young adult Unitarian Universalists and Unitarians from around the world.
yicuu 1 (1)The Young Adult Program at the ICUU Council Meeting in Amsterdam, July 2016 will offer young adult focused programming within the conference itself. We want the young adults to feel integrated into the larger program, but also have time focused specifically on their interests & to talk through how their experiences as young adult U/U are similar & different. Our goal is for them to connect to one another, hopefully building lasting relationships that will further spread and strengthen our faith globally.
The theme of the conference this year is Global Connection and Climate Change. Here is what D Banjop Mukhim, age 33 from India, writes:
"I am a journalist and a film maker. I work in a semi conflict zone wherein there is a lot of armed conflicts in the Garo Hills region of late. This is west from where I am living in Shillong and I live to report the casualties, try to understand the root cause of it and also negotiate with the state government on the need to end this bloodshed.
On the other hand, our land is blessed with a lot of mineral resources including uranium, coal and limestone. Of late the rampant illegal mining of coal and limestone has been stopped, thanks to an intervention by the country’s Supreme Court. Yet our people are at the receiving end for the government’s failure to ensure safe and clean mining. A lot of our rural congregations are yet to learn to understand the importance of protecting the ecological balance and how we are interdependent on the web of life. I am doing my bit in this direction."
Young adult Unitarian/Unitarian Universalists are eager to engage in and respond to the religious and spiritual needs and issues of our time. Through their participation in the ICUU World Conference, new connections will be made, engendering deep, abiding relationships that have the potential for these young adults to shape the course and action of Unitarian Universalism for years to come. Direct experience with others of different cultures is a powerful, effective, and life-transforming way to stretch and develop a person’s view of themselves, others, and the world.
We will be connecting to people in the international U/UU communities to help facilitate & coordinate with Melody Moberg & Rev. Sara Ascher the specific young adult programming for the conference. We will be designing the application process in conjunction with ICUU and will be including this with the materials that ICUU sends out when they begin to advertise the conference.
Rev. Sara Ascher is the minister of the UU Society of Wellesley Hills, MA and chairs the Youth Initiatives Committee of the UUPCC. Melody Moberg is the Director of Religious Education at University Unitarian Church in Seattle, WA and a member of the UUPCC Board. Sara and Melody will serve as the supervisors – coordinators of the Young Adult Gathering at the ICUU Council Meeting.
